CB radios are an important element of safety when transporting oversize loads.

As an oversize load driver carrying large, heavy or otherwise non-standard cargo, or a pilot car driver, you are a skilled navigator. Your job is to ensure safe and efficient travel no matter the road conditions to make sure the oversized load is delivered securely and on time.

 

Instant communication between you and the other driver is key in this job. Managing risks is part of your daily grind, and reliable, clear communication is a critical part of significantly dialing down all road risks. 

Below are the main features that you should be looking for when selecting a CB radio:

Public Address (PA)

Allows CB radio to serve as a public address while connected to external speaker systems. The PA can be used to broadcast both, reception from the CB or tailored messages generated by the CB user.

Handheld options

The outdoor life requires a communication option that works when you need to be on foot for a hike or to check out the trail before giving your convoy the green light. Having a quality handheld CB with a high-performance battery and vehicle charging options is an essential tool in the off-road/outdoor world.

P-Channels

P Channels are pre-configured memory Channels set by President. There are 5 such channels labeled P1, P2, P3, P4, P5. They use the FM mode, the frequency of an existing CB channel and a fixed CTCSS/DCS code allowing targeted communications with other users.

FM Mode (frequency modulation)

Improved sound quality with less background noise, which is optimum for communication within groups.

Weather channels/alerts

Allows reception of NOAA weather channels and setting of an alert. With bad weather like tornadoes, floods or whatever weather might be around the corner, the CB weather features are an important part of the safety toolkit.

Dual watch

Allows the monitoring of two channels simultaneously giving users more flexibility, e.g. keeping track of communication on a group channel and another channel like 19 to monitor highway info.
